🧐 What Are Africanized Bees?

Africanized honey bees, often called “killer bees,” are a hybrid of African and European honey bees. Introduced to the Americas in the 1950s, they’ve since spread across the southwestern U.S., thriving in Arizona’s warm climate.

⚠️ Why Are They Dangerous?

Unlike regular honey bees, Africanized bees are highly aggressive, defending their hives with relentless force. A small disturbance. Like a loud noise or vibration. Can trigger a massive swarm, putting people, pets, and livestock at serious risk.

🌱 Safe Bee Relocation: The Eco-Friendly Choice 🐝🌿

Not every bee needs to die! We prioritize humane bee relocation, moving Africanized colonies to safe areas where they can thrive, away from your home.

Why Relocation Matters

✅ Bees Power Our Ecosystem 🌎
Bees pollinate 75% of plants and one-third of crops, making them vital for food production. Even Africanized bees play a role!

✅ Protect Your Property 🏠
Killing a hive without removing it leaves behind honey and wax, attracting other pests like ants and rodents.

✅ Sustainability ♻️
With bee populations declining, relocation helps preserve Arizona’s ecosystem.

❌ When Relocation Isn’t Possible: We only resort to extermination if the hive is inaccessible, diseased, or an immediate danger.

Africanized Bee Removal. FAQ

How can I tell if bees are Africanized?
Africanized bees in Arizona often display behavioral and nest-building traits not seen in European honeybees. One of the easiest field clues is exposed or unenclosed hive building. For example, combs hanging openly on tree limbs, fence posts, sheds, or equipment. European bees usually build inside protected cavities (e.g., attics, block walls, irrigation boxes, roofs). Aggressive defensive clustering, fast chasing, and “bumping” behavior during approach are also indicators.

Note: The only definitive identification is behavioral, not visual. Both strains look nearly identical to the eye.

Why are Africanized bees considered dangerous?
Africanized bees defend their colony more aggressively and mobilize more workers during perceived threats. They pursue targets over longer distances and react faster to vibrations, noise, or objects entering their flight path. While their venom is no stronger than European bees, the volume of stings can pose serious risk to humans and pets.

Are Africanized bees common in Arizona?
Yes. Arizona is a hybrid zone, and most wild colonies in the Phoenix metro area contain Africanized genetics to some degree. This is why spraying or DIY removal attempts are especially risky here.

Can Africanized bees be relocated alive?
Sometimes, but not always. If a colony displays manageable aggression, beekeepers can cage the queen and relocate the hive for requeening. If the colony shows uncontrolled defensive behavior, relocation may not be safe for crews or the public. In those cases, non-lethal relocation is not recommended and chemical treatment may be required to protect people.

How does Busy Bee handle Africanized hives?
We assess the colony’s temperament, location, and flight path. When relocation is safe, we use low-disturbance extraction tools and transfer the colony to local beekeepers for requeening. If aggression is extreme, we explain all treatment options and use the least harmful, compliant method available. Safety is prioritized over ideology.

What should I do if I think I have Africanized bees?
Keep people and pets away from the area, avoid vibrating the structure (lawn equipment, power tools, knocking), and do not attempt to spray or seal the hive. Africanized bees can respond to disturbance instantly and in large numbers.

Does spraying kill Africanized colonies?
Spraying kills only the foragers on the surface and leaves the hive intact. The colony will continue sending replacement workers and may become more defensive. Professional extraction or controlled treatment is the correct approach.

Are Africanized bees good pollinators?
Yes. They are highly efficient pollinators and contribute to Arizona agriculture. The concern is not pollination. It’s colony defensiveness in urban environments.
