Avondale has something no other West Valley city has: two rivers that meet inside the city limits. The Gila crosses the southern part of Avondale and the Agua Fria comes down from the north to join it, and that confluence is the single most productive bee habitat in this part of the Valley.

A confluence is a bee highway

River bottoms in a desert city give a colony everything at once. Water that persists when landscape irrigation is the only alternative, mature cottonwood, mesquite and tamarisk that rot out into natural cavities, and a continuous shaded corridor to travel along. Where two of those corridors meet, you get the density of both. Colonies here do not have to commute far to find your property, and swarms moving along the channel arrive without ever crossing open ground.

A stage stop before it was a suburb

Billy Moore set up at the Agua Fria crossing in 1880 and called the place Coldwater; the post office followed in 1896 and Avondale did not incorporate until December 1946. That older core has housing to match. Block walls, mature shade trees, detached garages and outbuildings left from the alfalfa and cotton years. Those outbuildings are the ones people forget to check.

Then it more than doubled

Avondale had 35,883 residents in 2000 and 89,334 by 2020, across 47.9 square miles. Most of that construction went onto old farm ground on both sides of the rivers, which put modern tile roof voids and uncapped block cells within a few hundred yards of the best bee habitat in the West Valley. A five-year-old house here is not a lower risk than a fifty-year-old one; it is just a different cavity.

A river confluence is a corridor bees use whether or not there is a subdivision sitting on it, so Avondale gets traffic that has nothing to do with anyone’s landscaping. Old farm ground feeds them and new tile roofs house them. When we clear one, the comb comes out in full and the entry closes behind us, because an open tile field is the difference between one removal and one every spring.
