Signs You Need Wasp Removal in Surprise and the Sun Cities
Busy Bee handles wasp removal in Surprise and the Sun Cities, and here the roof vents deserve a look. Since 2023 we have found wasp nests inside roof T-vents and attic exhaust vents at three homes in Sun City and Surprise, and at two homes the wasps were finding their way into the house. Most of our wasp work here is still in the yard and on the patio: rosemary and other shrubs, patio ceilings, light fixtures and palms.
Call when you see any of these:
- Wasps coming and going from a T-vent or an exhaust vent on the roof
- Wasps turning up inside the house, even in winter
- Combs in rosemary, bougainvillea or the shrubs along the driveway
- A nest in a porch light, a patio ceiling fan or the patio ceiling
- A landscaper stopping work on a bush because of wasps
- Mud tubes on a wall, around a door or in a vent
Don't seal a vent while wasps are still using it, and don't spray into it from a ladder. The nest is treated first; then the vent can be closed with metal screening.
Paper Wasps on an Open Comb
This kind of open comb is the nest behind most wasp calls around Surprise and Sun City. We have found it inside roof T-vents, a backyard ceiling fan and a grill.
Workers Defending the Comb
A comb inside a rosemary bush or a porch light is easy to bump. Keep the hedge trimmer and the ladder away until it has been treated.
Mud Daubers and Their Mud Tubes
Around Surprise we have treated mud dauber nests in a stove vent and under an electrical panel, and removed tubes from a courtyard eave, a hole in the stucco at the roofline and a backyard vent. They are generally less defensive than paper wasps.
Wasp Removal in Surprise and the Sun Cities, Step by Step
Steps 1 to 5 are the usual visit. Step 6 applies only where wasps have been using a vent.
Paper Wasps Inside a Pipe Opening
Roof T-vents give paper wasps the same kind of shelter. In August 2024 we treated two wasp nests inside the T-vents on one roof in Surprise’s 85374 ZIP code.
Nests Taken Down and Bagged
A single yard can hide nests in many places. One July 2025 visit in 85388 took down nine: from the front and back patios, the shrubs, a fruit tree, a palm and under the roof tile.
Removed Paper Wasp Combs
One June 2026 visit in the 85379 ZIP code took down 27 wasp nests at a single property.
Surprise and the Sun Cities Are Covered from Cave Creek Road
Wasp calls in Surprise, Sun City, Sun City West, El Mirage, Youngtown and Waddell are handled from the Busy Bee office at 14819 N Cave Creek Rd Ste 2 in Phoenix (AZ 85032).
Our technicians are in this part of the Valley nearly every week, with more than 1,300 bee, wasp and rodent visits across these six communities since 2023, including more than 550 in Surprise and nearly 400 in Sun City. The same crews do bee removal in Surprise, Sun City and El Mirage, as well as rodent control in Surprise.
That takes in Surprise's 85374, 85378, 85379, 85387 and 85388 ZIP codes, from Marley Park to Sun City Grand, plus Sun City, Sun City West, El Mirage, Youngtown and the Waddell area.
Why Surprise and Sun City Homeowners Call Busy Bee
- Roof vents get checked. When wasps are getting inside, we check the roof vents and the attic.
- Vents closed with metal. Once the nest is treated, a vent the wasps keep using can be screened with galvanized metal or insect hardware cloth.
- Landscapers can get back to work. We treat the shrub and tell you when it can be trimmed.
- Bees and wasps on one visit. On a July 2025 bee call in 85374, the same visit took six paper wasp nests out of the aloe and cat's claw vines.
- 1,800+ five-star Google reviews and a free inspection on every job.
Where Wasps Nest Around Surprise: Roof Vents, Driveway Shrubs and Patio Ceilings
Sun City's older streets date mostly from the 1960s and 1970s, and most of Surprise is far newer. We have found roof-vent nests in both.
Sun City: 1960s and 1970s homes
In Sun City's 85351 ZIP code the median home was built in 1972, and more than nine in ten went up before 1980, per Census figures. In February 2026 we treated a paper wasp nest in a roof T-vent on a Sun City home. The next day the homeowners found 11 paper wasps inside; our technician checked the attic, screened the T-vent with insect hardware cloth and treated a second nest in an attic exhaust vent. Other Sun City calls have been for nests in a lime tree and at a roofline corner beside the front door, and for mud dauber tubes in side vents, beside a window frame and in a patio wall outlet.
Surprise, El Mirage and Waddell: newer homes and front-yard shrubs
In 85379, which takes in Marley Park, close to three-quarters of homes were built between 2000 and 2009, and in El Mirage's 85335 the figure is above 60 percent. Here the nests we find are mostly in the landscaping and on the patio: rosemary beside the driveway, bougainvillea, the shrubs around a pool pump wall, wall vines by the pool, the patio ceiling, a ceiling fan and an outdoor speaker, and a porch light with no bulb in it.
Roof vents come up here as well. In February 2026 we treated a paper wasp nest inside a T-vent on an 85388 home, and in July 2026, after wasps began turning up inside an 85379 home, we treated its twenty second-story roof vents, the rooflines and the shrubs, and found nothing in the attic.
Cold-month calls in early 2026
Most of our wasp calls here come between June and September. In February 2026, though, we were called to three homes in Sun City and Surprise, two of them for paper wasp nests inside roof T-vents, and in January we treated a palm in 85374 where wasps were working 40 to 50 feet up, along with all of its dead fronds. Paper wasp queens spend the cool months in sheltered spots, and a roof vent is one.
Check the driveway shrubs and the patio fixtures first, then look at the roof vents from the street. To catch a nest while it is still small, see how to tell if wasps are building a nest; for what each month brings, read when wasp season runs in Arizona.
